Look Awake, Even When You’re Not Feeling Great – Makeup Tutorial

Learn how to look great, even when you don’t feel great! We’ve all been there – you were out late, you are under the weather, you didn’t get enough sleep, but you have to look pulled together despite your puffy eyes and your pounding head.

Coincidentally, four days after I created this tutorial, I got the flu. So, I had to use these tricks first hand – which I think shows major dedication on my part 😉 Anyway, a few tips:

-Even though this is a day for makeup, it is not a day for A LOT of makeup. Layering on pounds of concealer, foundation, blush, and eyeshadow can actually enhance your tiredness and draw attention to dehydrated skin and puffy eyes.

-Hydrating your skin with a moisturizer and drinking plenty of liquids is a must!

-Remember, that if you are willing to try take on the day after a hangover, are a mom running on zero sleep, or are battling a pending or full-blown cold, you are a champ! Keep on keeping on!

Let’s get into it!

1. Wash Your Face with Cold Water

I mean COLD. It won’t feel very good (at least I hate doing it) but it will reduce redness and puffiness. Then, slather on your favorite moisturizer.

2. De-Puff Your Eyes With Spoons (yes, you heard me correctly)

Press two chilled spoons onto your eyes for at least 30 seconds. Again, this will reduce puffiness. *I recommend putting your spoons in the fridge either the night before (if you can plan that far ahead – I can’t) or placing them in the freezer right before you wash your face in the morning.

3. Grab some Visine!

Their redness-reducing solution is amazing. The whiter the whites of your eyes look, the more awake you will appear!

4. Apply a Hydrating Primer

Apply a hydrating primer before applying your foundation. A primer with a little radiance in it with give your skin a luminous glow.

5. Color Correct

Color correcting is a whole tutorial in itself. For the sake of time, I’ll keep it short. *Comment at the bottom of this post if a full color correcting tutorial is something you are interested in reading about!

-A green color corrector cancels out redness in the skin. I apply a green color corrector on the sides of my nose (I’ve got a whole lot of redness there) and on any blemishes before I apply my foundation and concealer.

-A peach or orange color corrector cancels out blue/purple in the skin. I apply a peach color corrector under my eyes, before my foundation and concealer, to cancel out blue/purple dark circles.

6. Apply Foundation and Concealer But Not Too Much

One pump of foundation is all you need! Foundation is meant to merely veil the skin, while concealer is meant to tackle the heavy duty coverage. After applying a light layer of foundation, apply your concealer underneath your eyes in an upside down triangular shape, on any blemishes, or on areas of your face that need extra coverage.

7. Fill in Your Eyebrows

Filling in your eyebrows will give you an instant face-lift and make you look younger and more awake.

8. This is a Day for Bronzer & Blush

Apply bronzer to the perimeter of your face to warm up your skin – and don’t skip blush! Adding a pop of color to your cheeks with instantly make you look more awake.

9. Add a Little Eyeliner

Apply a brown or black pencil liner to only the outer part of your eyes, making sure to really press the tip of the pencil into your lash-line. Applying liner only to the outer parts of your eyes will give your eyes a “lift” and squidging the pencil into your lash-line with give the illusion of thicker eyelashes.

10. Highlight the Inner Corners of Your Eyes

Apply a shimmery, champagne or ivory colored eyeshadow to the inner corners of your eyes. This will give your eyes a doe-eyed appearance.

Curling your eyelashes will instantly make you look more awake. After curling your lashes, apply mascara to your top and bottom lashes.

12. Enhance Your Natural Lips

Pick a lip liner that matches your natural lip color and fill in your lips lightly. Then, apply a lip balm or sheer gloss over to top, to add some dimension and hydration to your lips.
